How can we make molecular life sciences more accessible, engaging and relevant to people beyond the research community?

Through its Science & Society Supported Events programme, FEBS supports initiatives that connect scientists with wider audiences and encourage public engagement with science.

In 2026, six projects organised through FEBS member societies in Cyprus, Hungary, Portugal, Ukraine, Türkiye and Poland have been selected for support. Taking place between October and December, these initiatives explore different approaches to science communication, from hands-on workshops and intergenerational conversations to art and discussions about rare diseases.

Meet the six supported projects

🇨🇾 Cyprus | The universe within us: Discovering the Human Microbiome

Organised through the Society of Biological Sciences in Cyprus (βιος-SBSCy), this project focuses on introducing audiences to the fascinating world of the human microbiome.

Event team: Vicky Nicolaidou (Chair) and Myrtani Pieri (Main organiser).

🇭🇺 Hungary | Mission: DNA Rescue

A Hands-on Molecular Life Sciences Workshop Series for Children

Supported through the Hungarian Biochemical Society, this workshop series brings molecular life sciences to children through practical, interactive learning experiences.

Event team: Mihály Kovács (Chair) and Tibor Pankotai (Main organiser).

🇵🇹 Portugal | Tell Your Project to Your Grandma!

Science Across Generations

Organised through the Portuguese Biochemical Society, this initiative explores science communication across generations, encouraging researchers to make their work accessible to audiences of different ages.

Event team: Vítor Costa (Chair) and Vanessa Coelho-Santos (Main organiser).

🇺🇦 Ukraine | Autumn School for Young Biochemists

School 11: “The Letter That Never Arrived”

Organised through the Ukrainian Biochemical Society, this edition of the Autumn School continues its focus on engaging young people with biochemistry.

Event team: Serhiy Komisarenko (Chair) and Uliana Semaniuk (Main organiser).

🇹🇷 Türkiye | From Rare to Diagnosis

Bringing Rare Disease Research Closer to Society

This event, supported through the Turkish Biochemical Society (TBS), creates an interactive dialogue between science and society, exploring the journey from a patient’s story to a molecular diagnosis.

Event team: Prof. Dr. Muhittin A. Serdar and Prof. Dr. Güneş Özhan (Main organiser).

🇵🇱 Poland | From Science to Art

Creating New Languages of Science Communication to Society

Organised through the Polish Biochemical Society, this project explores the possibilities of art as a means of communicating scientific ideas and connecting with broader audiences.

Event team: Adam Szewczyk (Chair and Main organiser).

Have an idea for a science outreach event?

FEBS congratulates all six awardees and looks forward to seeing how their initiatives bring molecular life sciences closer to their communities.

The FEBS Science & Society Supported Events call for January to June 2027 is now open.

FEBS offers financial support of:
