FEBS Registration Grants support participation at FEBS Advanced Courses of PhD students and postdoctoral scientists from the FEBS area, which comprises countries with a FEBS Constituent Society. (Please note that FEBS Registration Grants have replaced FEBS Youth Travel Fund Grants in 2027 courses.)

In addition, IUBMB Transcontinental Youth Travel Fund (Trans-YTF) Grants may be offered by some FEBS Advanced Courses as a result of support from the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), for participation of scientists from outside the FEBS area in these courses.

Information for applicants

For details of grants available to attend a particular FEBS Advanced Courses, and how to apply, please check the relevant course website as they become available: the value of the grants will vary between courses, and applications are made to the  individual course organizers via their course website.

Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria for FEBS Registration Grants and IUBMB Trans-YTF Grants are listed below for reference, but please check the website of the course you are interested in.

For FEBS Registration Grant applicants:

• The applicant should be up to 35 years of age, except if studies were started later, or were delayed by maternity leave (18 months per child), prolonged illness or other personal reasons.
• The applicant must be currently registered as a PhD student at an institute of higher learning in a country where there is a FEBS Constituent Society (i.e., within the FEBS area) or must be a postdoctoral scientist within five years of having completed a PhD thesis, working in a country where there is a FEBS Constituent Society.
• The applicant must be a member of a FEBS Constituent Society and must provide evidence of membership (or a recent membership application).
• The applicant must not have received a grant from FEBS to attend a FEBS Advanced Course in the current or previous year, nor a bursary from FEBS to attend the FEBS Congress in the current year, nor a grant to attend the FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum (FEBS YSF) in the current year.
• The applicant cannot be a resident of the country where the course will be held.
• Young scientists from the organizers’ laboratories are not eligible for FEBS Registration Grants.
• Please note that the total number of meeting awards the applicant has previously received from FEBS (FEBS Congress bursary, FEBS YSF grant, and FEBS YTF award for previous FEBS AC) may also be taken into consideration in the nomination approval.

For IUBMB Trans-YTF Grant applicants:

• The IUBMB Trans-YTF Grant applicant must study/work and have current residence in a country that has an IUBMB Adhering Body or Associate Adhering Body but does not have a FEBS Constituent Society (i.e., be outside the FEBS area). The applicant must have resided in their country for at least six months before applying for the grant.
• The applicant must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program or be a junior researcher within 5 years of receiving a Ph.D.; applicants who have had a gap in their training must indicate this clearly in their application materials.
• The applicant must be a member of an IUBMB Adhering Body or Associate Adhering Body and must provide evidence of membership (or a recent membership application).
• The applicant must not have received a grant from FEBS to attend a FEBS Advanced Course in the current or previous year, nor a bursary to attend the FEBS Congress in the current year, nor a grant to attend the FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum (FEBS YSF) in the current year.
• Awards will only be made to support travel from the applicant’s current country of residence to the country hosting the FEBS Advanced Course.
• Young scientists from the organizers’ laboratories are not eligible for IUBMB Trans-YTF Grants.

Information for Course Organizers

As part of their application to the FEBS Advanced Courses, organizers can apply to FEBS for additional funds to support participation in their course of PhD students and postdoctoral scientists from the FEBS area. From the funds received from FEBS, organizers decide the number and amount of the FEBS Registration Grants for their course. For each course, recipients will receive an equal amount of support, which can be less than the registration fee and will not exceed €800 per person.

Organizers can also request in their course applications one IUBMB Trans-YTF Grant to assist participation of a young scientist from outside the FEBS area. These are for a maximum of 2,000 USD per person and cover the full registration fee, including accommodation and meals. The remainder of the funds can contribute towards travel costs. Please note that up to ten IUBMB Trans-YTF Grants may be funded each year across all approved courses.

Organizer should select grant candidates based on merit, and the eligibility criteria described above. The application procedure for the grants, the deadlines, the required information, and the eligibility criteria (linking to this page for reference) should be clearly explained on the course website.

The applicants should send their completed grant applications, proof of eligibility, and any other required documents (e.g., a CV and recommendation letter), to the organizer by the deadline announced.

Organizers should submit the list of selected candidates to FEBS Treasury with sufficient time before the start of the course to allow eligibility checks and communication with candidates. Please note that the CVs of the IUBMB Trans-YTF Grant nominations will be shared with IUBMB to finalize the approval process.
