Applications are now open for the first 2027 call of the FEBS Short-Term Fellowships, supporting PhD students and early-career researchers wishing to gain new skills, access specialised techniques and establish scientific collaborations through research visits to laboratories in other FEBS countries.

These fellowships provide an opportunity for young scientists to expand their research experience, work alongside international colleagues and develop collaborations that can contribute to their future scientific careers.

What do the fellowships offer?

FEBS Short-Term Fellowships provide financial support for research visits lasting up to two months, or exceptionally three months when justified. Funding includes:

  • €100 per day towards subsistence costs.
  • €300 towards travel expenses, with additional support considered in exceptional circumstances.

The programme particularly encourages new collaborations between laboratories and visits that provide access to expertise, training or techniques unavailable at the applicant’s home institution.

Who can apply?

The fellowships are open to:

  • PhD students, for whom at least one published paper as a main author is strongly recommended.
  • Early-career researchers who obtained their PhD within the past four years and have a strong publication record.

Applicants must be members of a FEBS Constituent Society, work in a laboratory in a FEBS country and propose a research visit to a laboratory in a different FEBS country. Additional eligibility requirements apply.

Application dates

From 2027, FEBS Short-Term Fellowships operate through two annual application calls rather than a rolling application system.

First call

  • Applications open: 1 November 2026
  • Application deadline: 10 December 2026
  • Results announced: by the end of January 2027

Second call

  • Applications open: 1 May 2027
  • Application deadline: 10 June 2027
  • Results announced: by the end of July 2027

Both calls cover research visits taking place between March 2027 and February 2028. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible and select the call that best aligns with their planned visit.
