The Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and the Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (KSBMB) have entered into a partnership agreement designed to enhance collaboration between the two organizations, thereby advancing the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, molecular biophysics, and related research domains in Europe and the Asian region.

FEBS and KSBMB have committed to uniting their efforts to achieve strategic objectives and to strengthen their connections. By promoting mutual scientific exchange through conferences and a newly established joint symposium at their respective annual meetings beginning in 2026, FEBS and KSBMB aim to lay a robust foundation for collaboration:

Starting in 2026, the joint symposium will be held as follows

  • the FEBS Congress 2026
  • the KSBMB International Conference 2027
  • the FEBS Congress 2028
  • the KSBMB International Conference 2029

Prof. Miguel A. De la Rosa, FEBS Secretary General, and Prof. Bong-Kiun Kaang, KSBMB President

“This day is of great importance for FEBS,” stated FEBS Secretary General, Prof. Miguel A. De la Rosa. “The agreement with KSBMB marks a significant milestone in FEBS’s steadfast commitment to promoting science and facilitating scientific exchange across Europe and beyond, while also strengthening ties with the Korean scientific community.”

“This MOU marks a mutually beneficial milestone for both KSBMB and FEBS. By strengthening our academic and strategic ties, we look forward to expanding collaborative research, fostering young scientists, and building a more connected global scientific community”, said Prof. Bong-Kiun Kaang, KSBMB President.

One of FEBS’ strategic objectives is to emphasize extroversion by fostering strategic collaborations between Europe and other continents. In 2024, FEBS co-launched the Milan Declaration on the Crucial Role of Science in Addressing Global Challenges in partnership with the IUBMB (International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), FAOBMB (Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists), FASBMB (Federation of African Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), and PABMB (Pan-American Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology).

About KSBMB

The Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (KSBMB) is the oldest academic society in the field of biochemistry in Korea. Dedicated to advancing science and technology and improving human health, the society plays a pivotal role in fostering academic development and promoting the dissemination of knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology.

As the largest academic society in the life sciences sector in Korea,  KSBMB has a membership of over 19,000 individuals spanning a wide range of bioscience disciplines. It hosts more than five academic conferences annually and publishes two journals and a webzine.

Recognized for its excellence, KSBMB received the Minister of Science and ICT Award in 2019 and has firmly established itself as a leading organization in the life sciences field in Korea.

About FEBS

Founded on 1st January 1964, the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) has become one of Europe’s largest organizations in the molecular life sciences, with over 30,000 members across 39 biochemistry and molecular biology societies (its ‘Constituent Societies’) in different countries of Europe and neighbouring regions. As a grass-roots organization FEBS thereby provides a voice to a large part of the academic research and teaching community in Europe and beyond.

As a charitable academic organization, FEBS promotes and supports biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, molecular biophysics and related research areas through its journals, Congress, Advanced Courses, Fellowships and other initiatives. There is an emphasis in many programmes on scientific exchange and cooperation between scientists working in different countries, and on promotion of the training of early-career scientists.
