FEBS is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2024 and we warmly invite you to join us!

In the vibrant era of the early 1960s, a visionary collaboration among leading European scholarly Societies ignited a remarkable journey in the realm of biochemistry. In 1964, born from this synergy was a formal charitable framework – the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), a beacon of unity and knowledge exchange across the continent. What began as a spark of collaboration soon blazed into a radiant platform fostering scientific understanding across borders. From its inaugural FEBS Congress, a magnificent journey unfolded, sprouting branches such as the esteemed journals FEBS Letters and The FEBS Journal. These not only became bastions for scholarly revelations but, through their income, also supported a thriving platform for FEBS’ other programmes.

As the years unfolded, FEBS embraced the ethos of progress, with its portfolio expanding to Advanced Courses for training and updates in specific research areas, and Fellowships nurturing international visits for lab research endeavours. Throughout the time, FEBS has spread its horizons, welcoming the dynamic wider landscape of molecular life sciences, transcending political boundaries, and accepting new member Societies. With the dawn of the 21st century, FEBS began pivotal programmes championing education, gender equality in science, empowerment of emerging scientists, as well as communication with the general public. Furthermore, it embraced developments in scientific publishing and has established two open access journals: FEBS Open Bio and Molecular Oncology. However, a focal point in numerous FEBS programmes persists: facilitating scientific exchange and collaboration among researchers from diverse countries, and supporting the advancement of early-career scientists through training initiatives.

As we stand on the cusp of commemorating six decades of FEBS’ unwavering support to the molecular life sciences community, anticipation fills the air. In 2024, a jubilant celebration awaits – replete with interesting competitions, special awards, and a grand unveiling of a global Molecular Life Sciences Day in March. Join us in honouring this remarkable journey as we reflect on 60 years of fostering scientific exchange, nurturing collaborations across borders, and empowering the next generation of trailblazers.

FEBS has been by your side for 60 years, so be prepared to be a part of a joyful festivity honouring this milestone – it’s time to celebrate and revel in the rich tapestry of our shared scientific heritage!
