The last few years have reinforced the concept that sphingolipids are relevant for human health and defects in their metabolism contribute to the aetiology of diverse diseases. Despite an extensive effort to understand what biology is dependent on a well-balanced sphingolipid metabolic pathway, we are still lacking a unifying picture of sphingolipid role in physiology. This FEBS Special Meeting –  SLBiol2023 – proposes to summon the sphingolipid community to discuss about the basic principles of sphingolipid biology and about how they can be integrated to explain the role of sphingolipids in human health.
