Youth Travel Fund (YTF) Guidelines

Attention of the course organizers is drawn to the possibility that participating students (PhD and postdoctoral fellows within five years of obtaining PhD) may apply for financial support through the FEBS Youth Travel Fund (YTF) to participate in a FEBS Advanced Courses / Workshops. The YTF grants support travel, registration, as well as accommodation and food.

YTF grants may be awarded to all participants of practical courses, but only to a maximum of 25% of the participants of Advanced Lecture Courses and Workshops. The organizer(s) should select appropriate candidates (for details, see below). All financial matters (including the YTF grants) will be handled by the FEBS Treasurer.
 

Youth Travel Fund Applications

The Course / Workshop organizers will be asked to help select and identify appropriate YTF recipients. Course Organizers will receive original YTF Application Forms corresponding to the number of YTF grants allocated to the particular FEBS Course / Workshop. The numbered original YTF forms will be forwarded to the selected students by the organizer.

Through the YTF Application Forms the selected candidates are asked to provide information on:

  • Personal data
  • In which country he/she is a student
  • Which FEBS Constituent Society he/she is a member of (proof of membership is mandatory)
  • Present position / present work / two recent publications if applicable
  • Amount of money requested and any other financial support
  • Has he/she received a grant from FEBS in the past two years
  • Modes of payment

Further Conditions for a YTF Grant – Eligibility Criteria

The Course / Workshop organizers are requested to pay special attention that all eligibility criteria are met before selecting students for YTF grants.

  1. YTF grants can only be used to support participation of students in Advanced Courses / Workshops sponsored or co-sponsored by FEBS. Special Meetings are not eligible to receive YTF grants.

  2. Applicants should -

    • either be registered as a student at an institution of higher learning in a country where there is a FEBS Constituent Society or be within five years of having completed a PhD thesis.
    • must be a member of a national FEBS Constituent Society
    • not have received a grant from the Youth travel fund to attend an Advanced Course in the current year or received a grant to attend the Forum for Young Scientists (held at the annual FEBS Congress) in the current year.

  3. Awards will only be made to persons travelling from their current country of residence to another country in the Euopean area.

  4. The amount of the award shall be related to the distance from the applicant's place of work to the venue of the Workshop.

  5. The awards shall be made by the Treasurer in consultation with the Workshop Organizer.

  6. Only in exceptional circumstances may any of these conditions be waived.

Western European participants will receive up to 80% of their travel and Eastern European participants will receive 100%.  The entire course fee will be paid.

Effective for 2010: TRANSCONTINENTAL TRAVEL GRANTS for YOUNG SCIENTISTS

Transcontinental YTF Grants for Africa / Asia / North America / South America

To increase the international visibility and profile of FEBS in student training and mobility, and to foster the international student exchange at FEBS events in Europe, organizers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the possibility to attract a limited number of young scientists (PhD and Post-Docs within five years of obtaining their PhD) from Africa / Asia / North America / South America to participate in European Advanced Course / Workshop events.

For each approved Advanced Course and Workshop event, organizers can request additional special transcontinential YTF grants (TransYTF) to cover travel, registration, as well as accommodation and food for

  • up to 2 young scientists from Africa,
  • up to 2 young scientists from South America,
  • up to 4 young scientists from Asia (incl. India, Indonesia, China & Japan)
  • up to 4 young scientists each from North America (USA/Canada)

It is entirely at the discretion of organizer(s) to select and identify eligible candidates (for details, see below). The course organizers are thus required to select and identify appropriate candidates. Selection will be based on the information provided by the applicants to the organizer(s).

The information provided by the young scientists on special TransYTF Application Forms should include the following items:

  • Personal data and information in which country he/she is a student
  • Of which IUBMB-associated national or international society he/she is a  member
  • Present position and a keyword sentence on research interests or thesis work
  • Amount of support requested
  • Preferred modes of payment and money transfer

Application Guidelines & Procedure – Transcontinental Youth Travel Funds -TransYTF

The course organizers are required to pre-check eligibility of young scientist applicants:

  1. TransYTF grants can only be used to support participation in Advanced Course / Workshop events

  2. Applicants for special transcontinental YTF grant from regions outside the FEBS area: 

    a.   should be a student at an institution of higher learning in a country where there is a IUBMB-related international society such as FASBMB (Africa) / ASBMB (North America) / PABMB (South America & Canada), FAOBMB (Asia). 

    b.   must be members of any IUBMB-related national or international societies mentioned under a. 

    c.   must be young scientists with a PhD or be within five years of obtaining his/her PhD.

    d.  must not have received a TransYTF grant to attend a Course in the current year.

  3.  Awards will only be made to young scientist traveling from their current country of residence / work to the country hosting the Advanced Course / Workshop event.

  4. Organizers are encouraged to demand letters of recommendation from the supervisor, as well as abstracts from applicants for TransYTF Grants.

  5. The FEBS Treasurer will grant the awards after consulting with the responsible organizer based on the suggested list of YTF recipients provided by the organizer.

  6. Only in exceptional circumstances may any of these conditions be waived.

  7. All financial matters will be handled by the FEBS Treasurer. Importantly, organizers have to e-mail to the FEBS Office in London a ranked list of selected YTF recipients (including a reserve list of a few candidates) at the latest eight weeks before the Advanced Course / Workshop event to leave enough time for further handling of all financial matters. Course organizers are strongly encouraged to verify the eligibility of young scientist applicants before sending the proposed recipient list to the London FEBS Office.
