You are cordially invited to this symposium in honour of Professor Maria Leptin, current President of the European Research Council and past Director of EMBO (2010-2021). The programme reflects Maria’s career and research interests, including her training in mathematics and immunology and her postdoctoral research on the embryonic development of Drosophila. Maria began studying gastrulation while a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen. As a Professor at the Institute of Genetics, University of Cologne and group leader at EMBL-Heidelberg, Maria’s most recent research has focused on the mechanics of shape determination during development. The programme also includes contributions from colleagues from Maria’s sabbaticals as a visiting Professor at the École Normale Supérieure, Paris, France and as visiting scientist at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, UK.
